Its a heady feeling when you win your first eBay auction: a mixture of happiness and perhaps just a little fear. After all, there seems to be so much to do before you can actually get your item. What do you do next?

The simple answer is: you send payment to the seller, as quickly as possible. The quicker you pay, the more your seller will like you, and the sooner your item will arrive. But how you go about it? That all depends on how you plan to pay.

PayPal.

PayPal is one of the most popular options for paying on eBay, to the point where eBay decided to buy the company. It allows instant electronic payment across the Internet. Money goes instantly from your credit or debit card to the sellers PayPal account, where they can either use it for Internet purchases or transfer it out to their bank.

eBay offer incentives for using PayPal, and almost all sellers now accept it. Its instant nature makes sellers very happy, and means that they can have your item packed and sent and leave you some positive feedback within a few hours of the auction ending. When paying by PayPal, you will be covered by PayPals own insurances and guarantees, as well as any that your card might have.

Cheques and Money Orders.

This is payment the old-fashioned way, and will lead to a long wait to your item. You need to post the cheque or money order, then the seller has to take it to the bank and get it cleared, and only then do they send the item. The only reason to use this method is if

either you or the seller distrusts electronic payment methods. If youre willing to go to the trouble with these sellers, though, you might get an item very cheaply, as most buyers just cant be bothered.

When you pay by cheque or money order, make sure to print the eBay order confirmation page (it will be emailed to you) and put it in the envelope with your payment. Underline or circle key information like your mailing address and the item number. Finally, remember to be patient: keep in contact with the seller, as it really can take a month or two before everything falls into place and your item turns up.

Money Transfers and Bank Deposits.

Some sellers may ask you to pay them using a wire service like Western Union, or simply give you a bank account number and ask you to pay money into it. Unless you really trust the seller, this is generally a bad idea – these methods are hard to trace and youre unlikely to get any money back if anything goes wrong. Paying in cash, it hardly needs to be said, is an even worse idea.

Its all a lot to take in, isnt it? Im sure by now youve got a few questions, which is why the next email will be a little eBay buyers FAQ. Lets hope we can solve any problems you might have.
About the Author

You are about to go to your first car auction. You can feel the excitement in the air. There are so many cars to choose from. But do you really know what to expect at a car auction? Do you know the legalities that occur at a car auction? Most people get in way over there heads at a car auction. If this is your first car auction, you better come prepared.

There are a lot of things you need to do and a lot of things you need to pay attention to at a car auction. First off, before you go to a car auction make sure you have enough money in your bank account. All cars purchased at a car auction must be paid in full. You also need to bring your drivers license and any other form of ID to the car auction. This is needed to buy the vehicle and to do the title work and registration.

When you first get to the car auction you should make notes of the cars you are interested in. Then, if you can, go to kellybluebook.com and check the retail value of the vehicles you would like to purchase. This way you know what to go with when you make your bid. At a car auction, many vehicles have a reserve price. This means that the vehicle has a minimum price t be sold at. If it is too high, do not bid on it. Be sure when you do bid that you do not get into a bidding war. Never bid more than you can afford. If the bidding war begins, just walk away. At a car auction, it is

every man for himself.

Before you begin to bid on cars, you need to see if the vehicle is a good buy or not. Many vehicles at a car auction could have been previously damaged. An example of this is in Texas and Louisiana many cars were severely damaged by flooding during a hurricane. These vehicles were sent to a car auction and the buyers more than likely had no idea the vehicles had flood damage. You may also wish to take a mechanic to the car auction. A mechanic is a good idea at a car auction because they can see where someone may have tried to hide repairs and damage that the vehicle might have incurred. Lastly, you can get a free Carfax vehicle history report on the vehicle if you get the vehicles identification number (VIN).

Remember, at a car auction vehicles are sold “as is” and they do not come with a warranty. Keep all of these tips in mind to protect yourself from a bad purchase. You are supposed to go to a car auction to get a great deal on a car and to save money. With the proper frame of mind, this is easily accomplished.

The words you select to describe your item will have a tremendous impact on the final price it receives or if it receives any bids at all. This is because no matter how great the item is you have up at auction, if you use words that dont lead prospective buyers to it, no one will ever see it. You have a total of 45 spaces to use for your auction headline to get people to visit your auction, so its extremely important that you use each space wisely.

The vast majority of buyers search through eBay listings by entering the item they are looking for into eBays search engine. The main auction search engine only searches for words listed in auction titles. If a person selects a word that isnt in your auction title, your auction wont come up as a result of their search.

This means that by far the most important task you have when composing a title for your auction is to use words that are relevant and specific to the item you are listing. While this may seem obvious, a lot of sellers dont do it (in fact, searching for listings in which people have ineffective or misspelled titles can often get you some great items which you can resell for a profit).

If you are going to spend any extra time on your auctions, thinking through the best key words for your title is where you should spend that time.

With a limit of 45 spaces, writing everything you want in the title just isnt going to be possible. For example, say you have a complete set of four bobblehead giveaways, sponsored by Mountain Dew, that the Minnesota Twins gave away at select home games during the 2002 season.

Although accurate, that description is way too long for the allowable number of spaces. The key is to think through an accurate description that includes everything and then taking the most important words out of that and using them.

A simple title might read “Minnesota Twins Bobbleheads”. However, that title would be ineffective because it isnt specific enough. While there are many buyers who are looking for Minnesota Twins memorabilia and bobblehead dolls, the categories are too large and your auction will be lost among all the listings. You will have a very limited number of people who will ever see your auction.

A better title might be “2002 Complete Set Minnesota Twins Bobbleheads”. This title uses every available space and gives a specific description of what you are selling. It will also now appear in results for a narrower search.

Another possible title might be 2002 Minnesota Twins Bobblehead Bobble Head”.
People searching for this

item type bobblehead into the search engine, while others type bobble head. A search for one will not bring up any results for the other, so at times its to your advantage to list two different spellings of the same word.

Take a few minutes to think about who would want the item you are selling and, if they were searching for it, what words would they be most likely to type into the search engine.

You will find many sellers using what some call Power Words. These are words such as RARE, LIMITED, VINTAGE, UNIQUE, WOW, GREAT, WONDERFUL and AWESOME. Many sellers seem to think that using words such as these will attract more bidders to their auctions.

Ill guarantee you right now, that no one types any of these words into eBays search engine. The use of words such as these does nothing but take up valuable space that could be used for words buyers do search for. Avoid them like the plague

The same applies to the symbols so many sellers use in their headlines. They try to make their headline stand out by using symbols such as $,#, %, and @ in their auction titles. A particular favorite of many is L@@K!. Once again, all of these are a complete waste of valuable title space.

The only symbols you should ever use are & or + when their use will save you valuable title space.

Acronyms and abbreviations are another matter however. Collectors of certain items have developed their own abbreviations and acronyms for certain commonly used phrases within their specific collecting specialty. It is to your advantage to learn at least some of these.

NR, for example, means “No Reserve.” To a Star Wars collector ROTJ means “Return Of The Jedi.” Becoming familiar with some of these that are common with the type of items you sell will allow you to get more key words into the limited space which will result in more people viewing your auction.

Spend some time browsing the titles that others have created for their auctions. Look for both good and bad examples of titles. Just spending a few hours doing this and thinking about where the seller could have improved their title will help you enormously in writing titles for your own auctions.

Never forget – the first step is getting buyers to your auctions because if they cant find them, they cant buy anything from you.

Here is some great news if you are currently earning a living or making some extra cash through auctions or were considering it.

Yahoo Auctions has announced that they will stop charging fees for US based auctions. This is designed for the consumer auctions primarily but has very important implications for internet marketers as well.

“Yahoo! Auctions has changed its pricing to create a model that is free for all consumers listing items on our Auctions platform. We have eliminated all fees associated with Auctions listings, including listing fees and final value fees. Many users have been asking for this type of structure, and we are happy to provide it as a way to strengthen our partnership with the seller community and clearly demonstrate our commitment to our sellers success. The new pricing model will go into effect Monday, June 6, 2005″
Visit http://auctions.yahoo.com/phtml/auc/us/promo/announcements.html for the full story.

What does this mean for

you?

Simple.

If you ever wanted to make money online and stopped because auction sites charge to even list an item (plus then the fee a the end of the auction), then this is a great timeto try out this business model and make some extra money.

We all have items laying around the house (and to tell you the truth, fleamarkets and garage sales can be an absolute treasure trove too) that could be worth a lot of money to someone else and you thought it was just junk.

Basic information about photographing auction items and editing and uploading the images.
April, 2003

Millions of potential buyers visit the online auction sites every day. In 2002 eBays 27 million active members participated in transactions totaling over $4 billion dollars. If you are looking for a share of that market, all you need are the items to sell, time, and some auction know-how.

One essential component to a successful auction sale is a professional looking, accurate image of the item for sale. In most cases, an auction photograph should show only the actual item that is being auctioned. It should fill the entire frame, be well lit, and in focus. It is preferable to show the item from at least two angles. Any particularly interesting features should be shown in a close-up shot, as should any more than minor flaw. Achieving a great auction image takes a time commitment and with practice gets easier. This article provides the basics of getting that image onto your auction listing.

The basic equipment needed is a digital camera, scanner, or 35 mm camera and photo editing software. It is helpful to have a website on which to store your images. Most auction sites provide image storing for one image and many offer additional image storage for a small fee. Having your own storage allows you to place your images anywhere in your listing at no additional fee.

If you will be purchasing equipment and software, the following sites provide reviews and ratings of digital cameras, scanners, and photo editing software.

http://www.epinions.com/Digital_Cameras
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/
http://www.digital-camera-reviews.com/ Using a digital camera

Background – Use a plain, solid colored background that contrasts with the primary color of your item. A piece of black or dark material and a piece of white or off-white material should be all you need for the majority of your items.

Lighting – Shooting your photographs outdoors on an overcast day or in the shade provides great natural light and avoids shadows and glare from the cameral flash. But you can also achieve good results indoors in a well lit area. If the item you are shooting is producing a reflective glare, try shooting at a bit of an angle to avoid having the light reflect straight back into the camera.

Click here for photo samples showing various backgrounds and lighting

Camera Settings – Consult your camera manual for resolution and compression settings and experiment with different settings and your editing software to determine your preferred settings. The goal is to end up with an image with lower resolution and higher compression. Some prefer to accomplish these goals primarily with their camera settings. Others prefer to shoot at higher resolution with less compression for higher quality photos and adjust the resolution and compression during editing. The lowest resolution you should shoot with 640 x 480 pixels. Zoom in – You want to photograph the item so that it fills the frame. While other shots might be more artistically pleasing, potential buyers are only interested in the condition and quality of the item itself. However, do not sacrifice the sharpness of the picture to get a closer shot; you can crop the photo later. Get as close as you can and still have a well focused shot. Multiple shots – One advantage to using a digital camera is that there is no additional cost associated with taking multiple shots of the item. Take several shots of all sides of the item so you have plenty to choose from when you process the photos. Upload the images to your computer – Consult your camera and/or photo editing software for how to upload your digital photos to your computer’s hard drive. Scanning your items Scanning works best for two-dimensional items such as trading cards, prints, book covers, etc., but if you work at it, you can obtain a useable image for other items as well. The quality of the scan of a 3 dimensional item will be improved by covering the item with a contrasting cloth since the cover won’t close over the item. Scan your items at 72 dpi and save the file in a format your image editing software can read.

Click here for samples of

scanned items Using a 35 mm Camera To get the best images from print film, again you need to start with a very high quality photograph. The background, lighting, and zoom recommendations for Digital Photography apply to 35 mm photography as well. You can have your print film processed onto a CD or printed to photos you can scan into your computer. Image Editing
Adjusting the image – If you take high quality photos, the amount of time needed for photo editing will be greatly reduced. Once you have uploaded the photos to your editing program it’s simply a matter of choosing the best shot(s), cropping as close to the image as possible, and correcting for brightness and sharpness if needed. When adjusting brightness and focus, be careful to maintain the actual color and texture of the item. Also, do not adjust out any flaws in the item. You want the photo to be an accurate depiction of the item.
Sizing the image – Once you have cropped and adjusted the image, you will want to make sure it is the proper size for adding to your auction. If you are using the image service on the auction site, you photo will be sized accordingly, however, I prefer to size it myself so I know what it will look like ahead of time. eBay’s picture service resizes to 300×400 pixels and other sites recommend 300×300 pixels.
Extras – I like to frame the photo to give it a finished look and some sellers add a copyright notice or their name to the photo, particularly if it is a popular collectible.
Saving the image – Once all of the adjustments have been made, you will need to save the edited version of the photo as a JPEG file (GIF is also acceptable for most auction sites). Give the file a meaningful name that will make it easy to locate when you go to add it to your listing. (You don’t want to have search through files named image1, image2, image3, etc. to find the right photo). If you have the option when saving, select “save for web” which will provide further compression if necessary. Check file size – Double check your file size to make sure each image is 50 KB or less. The file size generally is listed under “properties” in your photo editing program. In windows you can navigate to the file, right click on it, and select “properties.” When adding multiple images to your listings it is recommended that the total maximum size not exceed 1500 KB to avoid slow page loading. Most users connect to the Internet with a 56 K or slower modem and most people will not wait more than 20 seconds for a page to load.

Click here for sample photos illustrating cropping, sizing, focus, background, and camera angle. If you are using the photo services provided by the auction site you are ready to add your photos to your listings. Typically there is a section of the auction listing pages where you can “browse” to the photo you want to add to the auction and click on the file for that photo. For example, on the third page of eBay’s listing system there is an “add pictures” section. If you know the location of your photo, you can type the path name into the form, but to avoid mistakes, I prefer to use the “browse” button next to the form. Clicking “browse” brings up a window in which you navigate to your image file, highlight the file, and click “open” or press “enter.” If you have multiple images for the listing you continue down the line until all the photos are added. When you submit your listing, those photos will be uploaded to eBay’s photo service and will appear in your listing. If you are storing your photos on your own website you will need to upload the images to your site. That is typically done using FTP (file transfer protocol). Consult your web hosting service for instructions on how to transfer the images to your website. Once uploaded, you will need the image URL to add to your auction listings. The image URL will be something like http://www.myhostingservice.com/directoryname/imagename.jpg. In the “add pictures” section of eBay, you can click on “Your own web hosting,” type in the URL, and have the image appear at the bottom of your auction listing. However, the advantage to using your own image hosting is that you can then place your image anywhere in your listing using an “img src” tag. Again, you will need the URL of your image and you will place it into your listing with this code

Did you know that most people who make big money on the net do so by selling dubious money-making schemes to others?

And they seem to get better at it every day. They have mastered the art of using enticing headlines that grab you by the neck and pull in sales even from Spam. Make no mistake about it, these guys know human nature and use their knowledge to the maximum. This gives an honest guy like you and me no chance at all. Little wonder that so many of us have lost so much money online, ordering “guaranteed money-making schemes” that never worked.

This article is not supposed to discourage you or kill your dreams of making it big online. The aim here is to give you the facts. Facts that will help you decide on a course of action that will change your online fortunes.

The facts are that there are thousands of people making money online. This is a fact that the hype and scum artistes have cashed in on to sell their schemes, which benefit nobody else but themselves.

The facts are that vast majorities of people who make money online, genuinely, make it using well-known web sites.

So while your efforts to be original and unique are appreciated, would it not be a better idea to find a proven, easy way to make money online? You can then use your profits to finance all the other adventures you have in mind, and your experiences to help you succeed much more easily with project number two.

You would naturally want to get the information to succeed from an expert. An expert being somebody who has made money from the particular well-known site you have chosen to go with.

Let us say that you make the wise decision to zero in on the single site that has had the highest number of publicized

cases of people who have actually made money. Real people with real names and addresses. The site is of course eBay.com.

You would naturally want to get your information from an Ebay expert.

Actually there is such a person. Somebody who has made over $350,000 in sales, in less than one year, working part-time. Somebody who has successfully auctioned a wide variety of items like: Wide screen TV sets, wedding dresses, DVD players, garden ornaments, jewelry, designer goods, VCRs, tools, binoculars, cars and even information products.

Brian McGregor is such an expert and he has documented all his experiences and some simple steps and ideas to follow to ensure that you are successful with Ebay. It is all in an amazing ebook aptly titled “The eBay Formula.” It is available at this link:-

http://www.workwinners.com/ezGaffurl.php?offer=ckyalo&pid=19

By simply understanding and knowing what you are doing, you can be very successful doing your online business through Ebay.

The traffic on Ebay is massive, check out the figures for yourself at any source you trust. eBay.com has a staggering 10 million items on sale at any point in time. The site gets 1.5 billion auction page views each month. This is the key that makes it so easy for ordinary people to make money on Ebay. It is simply a matter of taking your products to where the customers are waiting for it. But you need to know what you are doing. It all boils down to getting the formula to maximize your auction effectiveness.

One day, you might decide that you want to end an auction early. Before you do, though, you should consider why you want to do it: cancelling auctions upsets buyers and upsets eBay, and there might be a better to way to get what you want.

I Want to Change my Listing.

If you just want to revise your listing, you dont always need to end it. For listings that have more than 12 hours left to run and havent received any bids, you can revise almost everything. You can remove the Buy it Now price or reserve price, change the duration of the listing, or add listing upgrades.

If the listing already has one or more bids, then you can still add upgrades, or add to the description. You add more pictures too, if you want to. Once the listing gets into its last 12 hours, however, what you can do becomes far more limited, even if it has no bids: you can only really add to the description.

Its a very bad idea, by the way, to cancel one listing and ask bidders to bid on another listing for the same item instead. The chances are theyll be annoyed with you, and wont bother.

The Item is No Longer for Sale.

Perhaps you sold the item to someone else, you lost it or it got broken. Whatever happened, if you no longer have the item to sell, you should remove your listing – in fact, this is just about the only situation when eBay allow you to.

However, you need to make sure you get the listing removed quickly – if you leave it to the last 12 hours, eBay will refuse to let you remove it,

whatever has happened. This might seem cruel, but its there to stop people from backing out in the last few hours because they want to try again for a better price.

So How Do I End My Listing Early?

You can do it at this page: http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?EndingMyAuction. Just type in the item number and hit Continue.

Now, be very careful. The option you almost certainly want to choose is Cancel bids and end listing early, NOT Sell item to high bidder and end listing early. Youll be asked to choose a reason why you ended the listing, and then it will end. Your bidders will be emailed to let them know what happened.

Note that ending a listing early because it looked like it wasnt going to get a good price is against the rules, and eBay could come after you and get upset.

Speaking of breaking the rules, if youre selling software on eBay, did you know that there are special rules that apply to you? Plenty of sellers have no idea, and are being caught out every day – thats why our next email will explain the rules clearly for you, just in case you need to know.
About the Author
